Can You Improve Your Paint Application in 5 Easy Steps? Yes, You Can.

Air Spray Tech Consulting | Tech Corner

Mastering Proper Spray Gun Technique for a Flawless Finish!

At Air Spray Tech Consulting, we believe every professional or DIY finisher can improve their paint application results by following a few simple—but critical—technique adjustments. Whether you're using an HVLP spray gun, air-assisted airless system, or conventional air spray gun, proper technique makes the difference between a poor finish and a perfect one.

🧰 5 Steps to Better Spray Gun Application

1. Hold the Spray Gun Perpendicular
Always keep the spray gun perpendicular (90 degrees) to the surface being coated. Angling the gun results in uneven coverage and inconsistent film thickness.

2. Maintain a Parallel Stroke
Move the spray gun in a smooth, parallel motion across the surface. Avoid "arching" your motion, which causes overspray and missed spots.

3. Trigger Timing Matters
Start your motion before pulling the trigger, and release the trigger before stopping the motion. This eliminates heavy spots and uneven edges at the start and end of each stroke.

4. Keep a Consistent Spray Distance
Maintain a uniform spray distance of 6–12 inches from the surface throughout the stroke. This ensures even atomization and prevents runs or dry spray.

5. Overlap Each Pass by 50%
Overlap each spray pass by approximately 50% to ensure a smooth, even paint film build. This helps eliminate striping and uneven coverage.

🎯 Why It Matters

Correct spray technique is essential for achieving professional-quality results, reducing material waste, and maximizing your spray equipment's performance. Whether you're spraying automotive coatings, wood finishes, or industrial paints, these five steps apply universally.
