Before you pick up your spray gun and begin coating, ask yourself one crucial question:

Is your paint ready?

You’ve prepped the surface, masked the area, and checked your equipment—but if your paint isn’t properly conditioned, your finish could suffer, no matter how perfect the setup.

🧪 What Is Paint Conditioning?

Paint conditioning is the essential process of preparing your coating material so it performs as the manufacturer intended. This includes proper storage, temperature control, and thorough mixing.

🧊 Consider Paint Temperature

• Was your paint stored in a cold shop or garage?

• Cold paint flows differently and may not atomize or cure correctly.

• Always allow paint to reach room temperature before mixing and spraying.

🧴 Use Oldest Inventory First

• Follow the FIFO rule: First In, First Out.

• This helps prevent using outdated or settled paint with degraded performance.

🌀 Mix It – Thoroughly

• Suspension is critical. The paint at the bottom of the container must be the same as at the top.

• Use an air powdered paddle mixer, or air-powered agitator to ensure consistent results—especially in pressure pots and larger tanks.

• Inconsistent mixing leads to uneven film build, pigment separation, and costly finish failures.

• For large volume applications, inline mixers and automatic agitation systems can help keep material uniform during extended spray cycles.
