What Is a Protective Lining?
A protective lining is a coating system installed on the interior or
containment surface of a tank, vessel, pit, secondary-containment area,
pipe, process structure, or concrete surface. It separates the substrate
from the material being stored, processed, or contained.
Unlike many atmospheric coatings, protective linings may remain in constant
contact with water, chemicals, fuels, wastewater, process liquids, or
abrasive solids. A small defect can allow the service material to reach the
substrate and begin corrosion, contamination, blistering, delamination, or
structural deterioration.
Important: This course provides contractor education. It
does not replace the project specification, the lining manufacturer's
written instructions, applicable safety requirements, or the decisions of
the owner and qualified corrosion professionals.

Safety Comes First
Protective-lining work may involve confined spaces, hazardous atmospheres,
chemical exposure, respiratory hazards, flammable materials, high-pressure
spray equipment, abrasive blasting, elevated work, electrical equipment,
and high-voltage holiday testing.
Contractors must follow the project safety plan, safety data sheets,
equipment instructions, applicable regulations, and the requirements of
their respiratory-protection, hazard-communication, lockout/tagout, and
permit-required confined-space programs.
