Selecting a Lining for the Material Being Contained
Successful lining selection begins with the complete service environment,
not a generic product description or resin-family name.
A Resin Name Is Not a Selection
Saying that a tank needs an epoxy, vinyl ester, polyurethane, polyurea, or
another generic material does not complete the selection process. Products
within the same resin family can have very different chemical resistance,
temperature limits, application requirements, cure schedules, and service
restrictions.
The correct lining must be suitable for the exact material being contained
and for every condition associated with storage, processing, filling,
draining, cleaning, startup, shutdown, and upset operation.
The contractor should understand the selection process well enough to
identify missing information and prevent an unapproved material from being
installed. Final selection should remain with the responsible owner,
engineer, specification authority, and lining manufacturer.
A general chemical-resistance chart can help begin the conversation. It
should not be treated as final approval for a specific project.
Information Required for Lining Selection
The manufacturer cannot make a meaningful recommendation from an incomplete
statement such as "chemical tank," "wastewater," "acid service," or "fuel
storage." The request should identify the actual conditions as completely
as possible.

Confirm the Exact Chemical Identity
Common names may not provide enough information. Trade names, waste-stream
descriptions, process solutions, fuels, cleaners, and proprietary products
may contain multiple ingredients. When available, obtain the current
Safety Data Sheet, technical information, and a written service description
from the owner.
The Safety Data Sheet can provide useful information about chemical
identity, hazardous ingredients, physical properties, stability,
reactivity, handling, storage, and exposure hazards. It is not a lining
compatibility certificate, but it may identify information needed by the
lining manufacturer.
Concentration Must Be Defined
A lining recommendation for a dilute solution should not be extended
automatically to a concentrated solution. The opposite can also be true:
dilution with water can change how a chemical behaves toward a lining.
The service description should include the normal concentration, expected
operating range, maximum concentration, and possible concentration changes
caused by evaporation, settling, reaction, contamination, or cleaning.
Temperature Is a Selection Limit
Chemical-resistance recommendations normally apply only within stated
temperature limits. As temperature rises, the lining may absorb the
contained material more rapidly, soften, swell, lose adhesion, or become
more vulnerable to permeation and chemical attack.
Selection data should include:
- Normal operating temperature
- Maximum continuous temperature
- Temporary upset temperature
- Temperature at filling
- Cleaning and sanitizing temperature
- Steam-out or hot-water exposure
- Rate of heating and cooling
Mixtures Require Their Own Review
Approval for individual chemicals does not automatically establish
compatibility with a mixture of those chemicals. Components can interact,
change pH, change solubility, produce heat, create reaction products, or
increase the ability of the mixture to penetrate the lining.
The lining manufacturer should evaluate the actual mixture whenever
possible. Provide the percentage of each component, temperature, exposure
type, and expected variations. If the composition changes from batch to
batch, the full range should be disclosed.
Do Not Ignore Impurities and Process By-Products
A small amount of an aggressive contaminant can influence lining
performance. Waste streams, recycled materials, fuels, process water, and
cleaning solutions may contain solvents, chlorides, acids, alkalis,
oxidizers, oils, dissolved gases, or abrasive solids.
Process reactions can also produce conditions that were not present in the
original feed material. Selection should consider what enters the vessel,
what happens inside it, and what remains during cleaning or shutdown.
Define How the Material Contacts the Lining

Include Cleaning and Decontamination
Cleaning exposure is part of the lining service. A tank may contain a mild
product but be cleaned with a hot alkaline solution, acid rinse, sanitizer,
solvent, steam, or high-pressure water.
The manufacturer should be given the cleaning chemical, concentration,
temperature, contact time, frequency, and mechanical method. Pressure
washing, scrubbing, scraping, and rotating spray devices can add mechanical
damage to the chemical exposure.
Chemical Resistance Does Not Equal Abrasion Resistance
A chemically compatible lining may still wear away when exposed to slurry,
aggregate, suspended solids, rapid flow, agitation, loading impact, or
mechanical cleaning. High-wear areas may require reinforcement, additional
thickness, aggregate, a harder system, or a separate wear layer.
Identify inlets, outlets, tank bottoms, agitators, baffles, sumps, elbows,
and other locations where movement or solids can concentrate wear.
Selection Includes the Substrate
The same lining may not be installed over steel and concrete in the same
way. Concrete porosity, moisture, cracking, outgassing, movement, and
surface irregularities may require primers, resurfacers, fillers, or
reinforcement that are not used on steel.
Existing linings require special evaluation. Compatibility with the service
does not prove compatibility with the old material. Unless an approved
overcoating procedure exists, removal to the specified substrate may be
required.
How to Use a Chemical-Resistance Chart
A resistance chart can help eliminate obviously unsuitable products and
identify possible candidates. Before relying on a chart, confirm:
- The exact product and formulation covered
- The chemical name and concentration tested
- The test temperature
- Whether exposure was immersion, splash, or another condition
- The test duration
- The meaning of ratings such as recommended, conditional, or not recommended
- Whether discoloration, softening, swelling, or other changes are permitted
- Whether written project-specific confirmation is required
Obtain Written Manufacturer Confirmation
Project-specific confirmation should identify the proposed lining system,
chemical or product, concentration, temperature, exposure type, substrate,
cleaning procedure, and any important limitations. It should also identify
required primers, thicknesses, cure conditions, and return-to-service time.
Written confirmation protects everyone by documenting the conditions under
which the recommendation was made. If those conditions change, suitability
must be reviewed again.
The Contractor's Proper Role
The contractor should:
- Review the specification and approved submittals
- Compare stated service with observed and owner-provided conditions
- Confirm the exact approved products and system components
- Obtain current manufacturer data and application instructions
- Identify missing or conflicting service information
- Submit questions and proposed changes in writing
- Install the approved system within its stated limits
- Document materials, conditions, application, inspection, and cure
What the Contractor Should Not Do
Do not approve chemical compatibility based only on personal experience,
a generic chart, an old project, a resin-family name, or a verbal comment.
Do not substitute a product without the required written approval.
Minimum Information for a Selection Request
- Project and equipment identification
- Steel, concrete, masonry, or existing lining substrate
- Exact chemical, product, or process material
- Concentration and expected variation
- Normal and maximum temperatures
- Immersion, intermittent, splash, spill, or vapor exposure
- Exposure duration and operating cycle
- Cleaning chemicals, temperature, pressure, and frequency
- Abrasion, agitation, solids, impact, or flow
- Required cure and return-to-service schedule
- Applicable specification and acceptance requirements
Chemical Information Also Protects Workers
Service information is needed for more than lining selection. Residual
chemicals, vapors, deposits, cleaning products, and reaction materials can
create serious hazards during tank cleaning, surface preparation,
application, inspection, and repair.
Review current Safety Data Sheets and facility hazard information. Follow
applicable requirements for isolation, decontamination, atmospheric
testing, confined-space entry, ventilation, respiratory protection,
personal protective equipment, fire prevention, and waste handling.

Lining selection is a service-specific decision. The chemical name alone is
not enough. Concentration, temperature, exposure, mixtures, impurities,
cleaning, abrasion, substrate, cure, and operating cycles all matter.
The contractor should install the approved system, document the work, and
