TMBe Your Own Product Finishing Consultant
Air Spray Tech Consulting – Tech Corner
Start with the End in Sight: The Reject Area
Take a walk through your paint facility—not alone, but with your finishing audit team. Your first stop is where the learning truly begins: the reject area, where non-conforming parts are separated from parts that meet quality standards.
This area tells a story. Your job is to read it.
Step-by-Step Defect Discovery
Sort the Rejects
Identify and group the types of defects you see. ○ Are they related to dirt in the film? ○ Coverage issues? ○ Excessive or insufficient coating?
Examine and Tag
Pick up each part and inspect it closely. Tag the visible defects using a grease pencil or tape.
Record the Defects
Note the type of defect and location on the part. ○ Was it a run, sag, drip, dry spray, or a missed area?
Repeat Over a Full Work Week
Perform this audit for every shift, each day for a week.
Summarize Your Findings
At week’s end, create a spreadsheet. Organize your data by part number, defect type, and defect location.
Then step back and look at the bigger picture:
○ Are certain defects more common on specific shifts or parts?
○ Are any patterns or “mystery defects” starting to emerge?
○ Are the same problems recurring in the same locations?
Involve the Team
This is the moment where change begins. Share your findings with your finishing team—especially the painters on the line.
Their experience and insight are invaluable to diagnosing real-world issues that data alone might miss.
Take Action—Without Spending Capital
Based on your defect summary, ask:
What improvements can we make without spending money?
Start with a corrective action plan. Surprisingly, many finishing problems can be traced back to just four foundational areas, known as The 4 M’s:
The 4 M’s of Finishing Problem Solving
1. Materials
○ Is the paint or coating meeting performance specifications?
○ Are materials stored and mixed according to the Technical Data Sheet (TDS)?
2. Manpower
○ Are operators and line personnel properly trained?
○ Do they understand proper spray techniques and quality expectations?
3. Machinery
○ Is your equipment running within manufacturer specs?
○ Are spray guns, hoses, pressure pots, and booths properly maintained?
4. Methods
○ Is the application process being executed correctly?
○ Are there process shortcuts or workarounds leading to inconsistency?
Conclusion
By focusing on the rejects first, documenting defects, and evaluating your operations through the lens of the 4 M’s, you can start correcting problems without capital investment.
These small insights often lead to big improvements in finish quality, efficiency, and consistency.
